The Healthy Start Consortia brings together people from various sectors of the community to address pressing perinatal health issues and improve quality and access to clinical care, social support, and education services in our community.

The Consortia strives to develop and implement community-driven plans aimed at reducing disparities in perinatal health by addressing the social determinants of health that impact maternal, infant, and family well-being. Our collaborative work includes activities that result in systems changes to accelerate improvement of health outcomes.

Maternal Mortality Campaign

According to Iowa’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee Report-IDPH, the following statistics highlight the truth of maternal mortality in our communities:

  • Maternal mortality is higher in the US compared to any other developed nation.
  • Over 60% of maternal deaths in the US from childbirth are preventable.
  • In Iowa, for every white individual that dies, 6 black individuals die.

Healthcare providers, family, friends, and everyone in the community must listen to, hear, empower, and advocate for our pregnant and post-partum people. If you are pregnant or had a baby within the last year, if something doesn’t feel right or you know something is wrong, say something. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/hearher.
