How much help has EveryStep and its Storks Nest program been to Xiomara and her growing family? Only one word can sum it up, she says: “Muchisimo.”
Xiomara is making her third visit to EveryStep’s Storks Nest, but the first time with the new addition to her family – a happy, healthy, beautiful two-month-old daughter.
“I love her. I'm so happy. I mean, it's scary sometimes. There's a lot to learn when you're a new mom,” Xiomara says. Thankfully for her, EveryStep and the Storks Nest are here for her.
Stork’s Nest is an educational incentive program for new and expecting moms who live in Polk County and meet income guidelines. Participants earn points for healthy behaviors such as keeping medical appointments, smoking cessation, WIC participation, breastfeeding, school attendance, and more. Points can then be redeemed at the Stork’s Nest store for needed baby items such as diapers, clothing, strollers, cribs and car seats.
Xiomara first joined EveryStep as a client and became eligible for the Storks Nest in April 2025 shortly after learning she was expecting. By keeping up on her doctor’s appointments during and after her pregnancy, she’s been earning points that she redeems at EveryStep’s office on the east side of Des Moines.
Xiomara says the help has been a godsend. “Especially diapers. I have WIC, but only for food and formula. The diapers, that is expensive - and she uses a lot,” she says, “and soap and diapers and a baby carrier. Oh, and the baby monitor! Yes, that's helped me a lot!”
Perhaps the biggest and most important thing the Storks Nest has helped Xiomara with is a new car seat for her newborn. As any mother can tell you, a proper car seat is an absolute necessity for safely moving your baby around town.
“I'm so happy and I'm glad I have this help. Thank you so much,” Xiomara says, “Every parent needs that help sometimes.”
