The Opportunity to Make a Difference: Meet Hospice Nurse Lori Carlyle
A hospice nurse for 14 years, Lori Carlyle has been serving EveryStep patients since 2020. Lori says she discovered her passion for hospice care when she went through her nurse training 20 years ago. “I love the opportunity to make a difference,” says Lori.
“If I can give them peace and if I can make death a really sacred moment for them, then I feel like I’ve done my job,” says Lori. “Have I managed their symptoms? Have I made the family feel okay about what's happening? Have I educated them? I feel the more education we provide for them, the better it will be. They're going to understand everything that will be happening.”
Lori says EveryStep Hospice is truly a team effort. “It's just not me. This group that I work with is amazing. From our aides, our nurses, our social worker, our spiritual care counselor and bereavement person, and our providers — we're all really good team players.”
With experience as a hospice nurse and director with other organizations, Lori says EveryStep is special. “I feel very valued here. We're all living the same mission. It fills my cup to know that I'm making a difference for people and their families.”
Between the two of them, Lori and her husband Brian have five children and seven grandchildren (with another on the way). In her spare time, Lori loves going through antique shops and following the Iowa Hawkeyes. She sees EveryStep Hospice as the final stop on her nursing career. “I've worked at other hospices, but I feel like I found my home and this is where I want to retire from. We all step up, so it's a great place to work.”
