The Joy of Giving
Giving is more than just a moral or social act. Scientists say the joy of giving is the range of positive effects on both physical and mental well-being. Helping others, whether by volunteering, charitable donations or other forms giving back to the community, makes people happier and healthier themselves.

Research shows these are some of the top health benefits of giving.
- Improved physical health. A study by the Journal of Health Psychology concluded those who regularly volunteer have lower blood pressure than those who do not. Another study published by the American Journal of Public Health showed that older adults who volunteer at least 200 hours per year had a significantly lower risk of death compared to those who did not volunteer.
- Better mental health. A study in Psychological Science found people who gave to others had lower levels of stress and improved mental health compared to those who kept money for themselves. Harvard University found that people who donate to a charity reported higher levels of happiness compared to those who didn’t.
- Improved mood. Giving has been shown to reduce the symptoms of depression and increase positive emotions. The act of helping others may help shift attention away from one’s own problems and increase feelings of self-worth.
- Increased brain function. A study conducted by the University of Zurich used brain imaging to show that when participants donated money to a charity, areas of the brain associated with pleasure and trust were activated.
- The “warm glow” effect. Research from the University of British Columbia demonstrated that people who give to others, whether in terms of time or money, experience a “warm glow”, leading to increased overall well-being. This effect was especially strong when people gave without expecting a tangible reward.
