Phyllis Foland: EveryStep Hospice Honored Volunteer

Phyllis Foland knew that volunteering for EveryStep Hospice was the right thing to do the minute she started. That was nearly 12 years ago

The Van Wert resident visits patients in their homes in the Osceola area, as well as at EveryStep’s Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. Foland, along with more than 40 other volunteers from across the state, was recognized for their contributions at Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa’s annual honored volunteer ceremony recently.

“It feels good when you visit someone and they give you a smile,” Foland says. “I just enjoy being with them.”

On any given day, Foland can be found playing cards, painting nails or just enjoying the company of the patients she visits.

Specially trained as an 11th hour volunteer, Foland can always be counted on to offer support as patients reach the end of their journey.

EveryStep Hospice offers a number of volunteer opportunities. Through the 11th Hour Program, volunteers can provide a quiet presence during the final hours of life, providing companionship and support for family members.

Foland also serves as a Life Review volunteer, interviewing patients about their lives. These conversations are recorded and given to patients or their families as a gift for a long-lasting memory.

EveryStep Hospice is seeking more volunteers like Foland. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact Angela Dodge at 641-464-2088 or at adodge@everystep.org. Interested in volunteering in our other service areas outside of southeast Iowa? Fill out our volunteer interest form.
